Improvement in life expectancy in the UK is a significant strategic issue for the UK Government and the economy and is currently poorly understood. As a consequence, it is important to study both the drivers enhancing life expectancy e.g. medical advances and social change and the inhibitors e.g. aspects of lifestyle and delays in development and delivery of treatment interventions.

The aims of the Longevity panel are to:

  1. Review evidence and develop understanding of changes in major causes of death over time namely: Cancer; Cardio-vascular; Respiratory disease; Stroke.
  2. Review academic research into emerging clinical advances and likely efficacy and impact.
  3. Assessment of the delivery capability of the UK health institutions to implement medical advances.
  4. Review developments in epidemiology and consequences for the assessment of health and morbidity risk.
  5. Examine the impact of social change on future life expectancy e.g. demographic change, childhood obesity.
  6. With the benefit of the above, review assumptions on longevity in the UK.
  7. Develop a public stance on issues surrounding longevity in order to stimulate understanding of the limitations of life coupled with the improvements in life expectancy.
